Nonprofit organizations are facing a serious challenge in the recruitment and retention of volunteers equipped to serve at the board level. Those who volunteer often lack a working knowledge of board governance, human resource management, fundraising, mission, and program issues. Generations…Past, Present and Future, a program of the Nonprofit Management Center, equips future volunteers with the tools necessary to serve as an effective board member of a nonprofit organization. Today, over 420 business professionals have graduated from the program.
Generations teaches willing, skilled candidates how to be informed, committed leaders on nonprofit boards by providing adequate oversight of administration in nonprofit governance. For employers, serving on a nonprofit board helps your employees:
- Build personal and professional networks.
- Strengthen leadership and management skills.
- Serve missions that they and your company supports.
- Increase your company’s visibility and presence in the community.
Upon completing eight, half-day sessions over a four-month period, the Nonprofit Management Center staff will work with the participants to match them with a local nonprofit board that fits their personal preference and passion. Individuals considering joining the program should be prepared to commit the time and effort necessary to support an organizations’ mission effectively as a board member.
Employers are also agreeing to release the employee to fulfill the time commitment necessary and supporting them with tuition for the Generations program.
