Position Summary

The Operations Director is responsible for the efficient and effective distribution, warehousing, logistics and facilities management functions of the West Texas Food Bank in support of its core mission of serving its partner agencies and their clients.

About the West Texas Food Bank

Mission: The West Texas Food Bank exists to collect, purchase, and distribute food to feed the hungry in 19 counties in West Texas in partnership with volunteers and community organizations and to educate these partners and the public at large about the real face of hunger.

We are the largest collaborative non-profit agency in the Permian Basin, and proudly distribute food to children, families and seniors through a network of 80+ partner agencies across 34,000 square miles. We work to continually improve the quantity, variety, and nutritional quality of foods offered to agencies for distribution to low-income individuals and families in need.

We will not turn anyone away who is hungry, and there is never a fee to our clients in need of food.

POSITION GOALS
  • Oversees and coordinates the activities within the Operations Department to ensure the efficient receipt, storage and distribution of food product in attainment of the organization’s goals and objectives while remaining in compliance with food safety standards.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing the goals and budget of the Operations Department including an active ongoing review and analyses of activities, costs, operations, and performance measures against stated goals andobjectives.
  • Oversees and coordinates all food sourcing efforts to ensure a sustainable supplyof food donations to meet the growing agency demands for nutritious product. Areasof food sourcing include fresh produce, retail donations, manufacturer donations, food purchasing, USDA and food drives.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Programs to support the order fulfillment needs of pantries, onsite and offsite distribution programs, and repackaging activities required by direct service programs.
  • Actively participates with the Senior Leadership Team members in the development and implementation of the organization’s goals and changing needs.
  • Responsible for the development, growth, and ongoing maintenance of USDA inventories in support of its related food programs.
  • Responsible for managing and maintaining WTFB’s equipment and motor vehicle fleet to ensure a safe and efficient operation.
  • Plans, organizes and oversees the inbound and outbound logistics of WTFB product via our in-house fleet or common carrier to ensure that transportation costs are optimized and within budget.
  • Assists in coordinating the organization’s disaster response, as needed, inpartnership with Feeding America and Feeding Texas.
  • Participates in formulating and administering organizational policies related to warehousing and facility operations.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources in managing Operation employees’ performance through developing and administering effective performance management and incentive programs to ensure employee engagement, compliance and equity within theorganization.
  • Partners with Human Resources to maintain DOT compliance foreligible drivers and OSHA compliance with respect to Safety Data Sheets(SDS).
  • Able to effectively manage and train the warehouse staff in the safe and efficient operation of materials handling equipment such as but not limited to forklifts, pallet jacks, wrapping equipment and othertools.
  • Responsible for facilities maintenance activities including the overseeing the preventive maintenance and repairs to the buildings, equipment and operating systems of the physical plant.
  • Responsible for maintaining the highest levels of food safety and sanitation practices to ensure a safe, healthy, productive and accident-free work environment that meets and exceeds AIB industry guidelines as well as local, State and Federal regulatory agency standards.
  • Supports our regional and national member food bank networks (Feeding Texasand Feeding America) by assisting with strategic program initiatives and participation in meetings, trainings and conferences.
  • Responsible for training and developing staff as well as implementing cross-training and succession planning practices.
  • Direct Supervisory Responsibilities of Compliance Officer, Warehouse Manager, Logistics Manager, Food Procurement Specialist, Warehouse Processors, Volunteer Coordinator, and Custodial Associates.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of warehouse management experience. Experience in food distribution industry is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position consists of work in both an office and warehouse environment: 

Office environment: requires the use of general office equipment such as telephone, computers, calculators and copiers and walking across the warehouse and office areas. There may be extended periods of sitting, standing and/or bending; listening, talking and/or visual concentration; writing and/or computer use. This position would normally have routine opportunities to alter physical position or change eye focus. This position requires some physical activity such as bending, twisting, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Warehouse environment: extensive walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying items weighing in excess of 70 pounds; operates material handling equipment; regularly exposed to variable weather conditions from mild to extreme heat and cold, fumes, air particles, contact with volunteers and customers; periodically works extended hours.
